Arresting the Slide from Prediabetes to Type 2 Diabetes

A recent study found that losing two to three kilograms of weight (about 4-7 pounds) and increased physical activity reduced the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 40 to 47 per cent over two years.

With the COVID pandemic, many people are even more sedentary than usual, and often that results in weight gain, which can exacerbate prediabetes. But there’s some good news.

The Norfolk Diabetes Prevention Study—an eight-year study of more than 1,000 prediabetic people—revealed that losing a few pounds of weight cuts the risk sliding from prediabetes into actual type 2 diabetes in half.

The study found that losing two to three kilograms of weight (about 4-7 pounds) and increased physical activity reduced the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 40 to 47 per cent over two years.

The Centers for Disease Control says that nearly one-third of Americans have prediabetes but only 13 percent know it, so getting some exercise and losing a bit of weight is a good strategy for most everyone.
