COVID and Diabetes

The relationship between COVID-19 and diabetes is very complex and it might involve more than one issue.

Diabetes sufferers are already at higher risk for a number of diseases, and the pandemic has revealed yet another. Persons with type 1 and type 2 diabetes have three times more risk of a severe reaction to the COVID-19 virus than those without diabetes, according to a report published by the National Library of Medicine.

The picture is further complicated by the fact that doctors treating COVID patients have found that as many as 14 percent who have no prior history of diabetes develop “new onset” diabetes. Why this is happening is not clear at this time, though five possible causes have been identified.

“The relationship between COVID-19 and diabetes is very complex,” Francesco Rubino, chair of metabolic and bariatric surgery at King’s College London, told Scientific American, “and it might involve more than one issue.”

The CDC estimates that more than 88 million American adults are prediabetic, and 80 percent of them are unaware of it. eSavvyHealth’s free eBooks on blood sugar and carbohydrates can help you understand this subject and what you might be able to do to safeguard yourself and your family. “Prevention is the best medicine” and eSavvyHealth can help.
