A new 21-nation study published in The British Medical Journal found that consuming a diet high in refined grains is associated with a higher risk of major cardiovascular disease, stroke and early death.
The study, which followed 135,000 participants over a period of nine years evaluated differences in health effects associated with eating refined grains, whole grains and white rice, and resulted in a recommendation that “lower consumption of refined grains should be considered.”
Other studies have come to similar conclusions. In addition, because of labeling confusions, consumers often misunderstand the difference between refined grains, whole grains and the various mixtures of both.
